Travel book to be exhibited in Istanbul

Journals belonging to travelers who wandered the Ottoman provinces have been taken down from the dusty shelves of history. Istanbul, on which many books have been written, was known as the mother of all provinces throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire.

"Seyahatname" is an exhibition of travel books from European travelers who were fascinated by Istanbul and who praised the city -- the pearl of the Ottoman Empire. Various reflections on Istanbul from Tournefort, Amicis, Grelot, Schweiger, Pierre Loti and many other European travelers will be showcased.

The exhibition, curated by Sinan Dirlik, is being produced collaboratively by 2 yaka, a communication, research and consulting company, and Ece eki from the Istanbul Modern Arts Gallery. Eray Makal is the art director while Ali Ay and Nilah Boztekin are in charge of research and text editing.

The exhibition is planned to be inaugurated at the beginning of the year 2010, when Istanbul will be the European Capital of Culture. Research and pre-design operations are still being conducted, and the producers are seeking institutional supporters and contributions of amateur research to supplement the project.

In November 2007 the same collaborative team produced the exhibition, "400 yilin mirasi: Kibris'ta Evkaf Kayitlari" (400 Years of Heritage: Record of Foundations in Cyprus) in Istanbul. The same exhibition will be displayed this year in two European capitals, in London on Oct. 1 and in Brussels in November. "Seyahatname" will be the team's second exhibition.
